About Us

Together Now

Together Now empowers the safety, well-being, and self-sufficiency of women and children in the developing world. Our work is currently focused in India and Haiti, where Together Now supports three key initiatives: The Stu Zisman Memorial Orphanage, the Society for the Protection of the Girl Child, and Gardens of Grace.Together Now is an entirely volunteer-staffed organization working under the the fiscal umbrella of our partner, the Pan-African Association. It was founded in loving memory of our beloved friend, professor, and father, Dr. Stuart Zisman.About Stu Zisman: Stu Zisman inspired so many people in so many ways. From the time he was a young man, he was involved in community programs as a baseball coach and as a camp counselor. He later received his under graduate degree in psychology and continued on to receive a master's degree in psychiatric social work. In his quest to understand and help people, he developed therapies to unfold potential in individuals through understanding issues that impede progress to fulfillment of goals. Those who were fortunate to be counseled by him benefited greatly. Because Stu was so comfortable with himself, he created an atmosphere of humor and acceptance for those around him.After counseling for several years, Stu's vision expanded from the individual to the community and global issues. Prompted by the great desire to make our world a better place, he returned to school at the University of California in Berkeley and received a second Master's degree in Public Health Education and a Doctorate in Public Health Policy and Administration. While working towards his doctoral degree, he began working with communities developing programs for youth in the areas of sports, arts, volunteerism, and other programs that were deemed valuable by community agencies.Stu perceived all political, emotional, and economic issues as contributing factors affecting health. His profound and broad definition of health could be summed up as a dynamic system directed at establishing wholeness in the lives of individuals and communities. He spent his time lecturing at conferences and working on committees that targeted developing programs that would elevate the status of world citizens. He would become a professor at the University of Iowa, Jackson State University, and the University of Northern Colorado, and have deep affiliations with several other educational institutions. His students were enriched and expanded by his deep understanding of interacting dynamics of diverse influences. Stu's deep penetrating analysis of global conditions evolved into finding ways to implement solutions to eradicate challenges of impoverishment and social justice. It is through this focus and deep compassion for humanity that Together Now evolved. As a friend, as a father, and as a husband, Stu's beneficence, joviality and unending concern for others uplifted and comforted all. An Orphanage for Earthquake Survivors in Haiti

The beautiful town of Mont Fleuri was devastated when a 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti. Numerous boys and girls lost their parents and had nowhere to turn. Following the crippling earthquake of January, 2010 this small town near the Haitian city of Jacmel found itself with the need to care for children that had either lost both parents, or one parent, leaving the surviving parent unable to provide for the entire family. Overnight, the community had to respond.Resources were scarce. Two camping tents were secured to house the children. It was to be a temporary solution, but to this day, the tents are the only home for fifty boys and girls.They have no change of clothes.They have no bathrooms.They sleep on the ground, rocks tearing at their skin.Only twice a day, they eat; often just a handful of beans and rice cooked over an open fire.Without money, most cannot go to school.Yet, the tents are their only home, and those within are their only family.This is no way for a child to live. Together Now's partner, the Pan-African Association has been on the scene, providing emergency provisions. Caring volunteers from the community offer protection. Yet much more is required. An orphanage must be built. Clothing must be provided. Children must be enabled to go to school.And they must be equipped with sanitation lest they fall prey to Haiti’s crippling cholera epidemic. Your help is desperately needed.The monthly cost of feeding all fifty children can be estimated at $800, for an annual cost of just $9,600. One child can be fed for an entire year for just $192. It takes only $50,000 to build an orphanage, which will include safe dormitories, a play room, a kitchen, fully equipped bathrooms, and offices for care-takers. In-kind donations would also be warmly welcomed. Children are in need of clothing, shoes, notebooks, coloring books, crayons, any games and activities to prevent them from the tedium offered by life in the tents.

Protecting the Lives of India's Daughters

Every day, 7,000 girls are aborted in India simply because they are female.

Worldwide, the ratio of girls to boys is 1,000 for every 1,005. In India, there are only 914 girls for every 1,000 boys, and often far fewer. In some regions, no girl has been born in years.

Sadly, even if they are born, many girls in India face a childhood of neglect, in which they aren't fed nearly enough. They aren't immunized or taken to the doctor as their brothers are. And when they die, it is not considered a tragedy.

Just because they are girls.

Together Now's Partner, the Society for the Protection of the Girl Child, organizes networks and partnerships of religious leaders, civil society, governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as volunteers. Together, we motivate and inform. Together, we provide hope.

In addition, the Society works towards providing tools, such as the Girl Child Hotline, which will enable parents in distress to receive advice and assistance from caring counselors.

Working side-by-side, differences can be made. Lives can be saved. And girls can be recognized for the beautiful gifts they are.
